Coffee drinkers make better lovers. Intellectual, well-mannered and gentle. These are what came to mind through my observation of this couple behind the lens. Tuck Chi is just as he seems – the perfect gentleman. Mun Cing really warms up to you when you get to know her. When I first interact with them, I felt that they don’t interact that much with each other and are quieter. However, they are actually quite lively with really good chemistry between them. “When they were together like that, they had been their own private universe, bounded just by themselves, a population of two. They were the world, and the world was them.” The couple suggested shooting at a café.
We came out with a concept with their request in mind. A week before the shoot, I saw on Facebook that the café they wanted to go to closed down. We started searching for cafés and narrowed down a few for the couple to choose from. We ended up with Doi Chaang Coffee as it is their most preferred café. I feel that the atmosphere is comfy and the effect is just perfect for a lovely shoot with this wonderful couple.
Originally, our concept is for the couple to eat happily in a café while we order bread for the couple and get them to take huge bites, making it comical. At the day of the shoot itself, we realised that this image doesn’t suit the couple. Therefore, we ordered coffee and cake for them as props. The couple drank their coffee while sharing secret smiles. There is a tricky part during the shoot. Whenever they laugh or give a big smile, the size of their eyes tend to minimise. Tuck Chi also commented his preference of not showing too much of his gums during smiles. During the shooting process, I will show them photos I’ve taken of them for their confirmation. Natural is the best as they ended up not minding with revealing their gums. I am not the one who discussed with them during the discussion. But, from capturing them in their matching blue outfits in the café, they gave off a bubbly and natural feeling. I feel that a café is a good location to take photos as its relaxing and has that fresh vibe to it. It also offers us a glimpse of the tender moments of the couple as they share bites of the cake, laughing away.
